Research Methods and Techniques: Reflection on Innovative Applications in Selected Areas of Geography

Abstract

In any discipline, the research method and techniques are continuously evolving and keep changing applications depending on the selection of a research problem with respect to traditional boundary and the changing needs of contemporary issues. Geography discipline is no exception to it. Geography has two major areas of studies – Physical and Human Geography with a large number of branches and sub branches. Field research tools and techniques, and application of specific techniques – qualitative and quantitative drive broadly the basic research method of a selected problem. In addition, the social science research methods are equally used and applicable in geography on different topics related to human geography. Analytical research method and techniques are also applied in geographical research, which are based on the use of statistical and other specific quantitative techniques. The research may use secondary or primary data or both that requires a complex methodology with a variety of techniques. With common tools and techniques, the application may lead to innovative approach as a contribution in research. This paper attempts to discuss and illustrate on different research techniques as applied in different fields such as Transport and Development Geography, and Natural Disaster related studies.
