About SERB 

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) is a prominent entity established to promote basic research in science and engineering. Formed under the Science and Engineering Research Board Act, 2008, and operational since 2009, SERB is a statutory body under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Its primary mandate is to provide financial assistance to individuals, academic institutions, research and development laboratories, industrial concerns, and other agencies engaged in scientific research. This support is intended to advance basic research and address matters connected or incidental to such research.

SERB aims to develop world-class management systems for promoting and funding basic research, aligning with global best practices. It has been pivotal in enhancing the research landscape in India, fostering innovation, and supporting the scientific community.

In 2023, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) was established as a statutory body through the ANRF Act, 2023. This foundation succeeded SERB in 2024, continuing its legacy of promoting and funding scientific research in India. ANRF is dedicated to furthering the objectives of SERB, ensuring sustained support for basic research and development across various scientific disciplines.
