Routray is a Geographer cum Regional Planner currently holding the position of Professor Emeritus (Rural Regional Development and Disaster Management) at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand after serving there about 30 years. He got his education at Ravenshaw (B. Sc. Hons & Distinction), Utkal University (M. Sc.), IIT Kharagapur (MRP), and Technical University of Szczecin, Poland (Post Graduate Certificate in Town and Regional Planning). He is a Fellow member of the Institute of Town Planners India and Royal Geographical Society London. He was a Reader in Geography of Utkal University and Assistant Director (Integrated Area Planning) at National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad before joining AIT. He has accumulated more than 40 years of teaching, research, consulting and training experience so far. He has supervised 156 Master and 6 MPhil dissertation and 33 Doctoral thesis. He has more than 150 publications (Research monographs, Book chapters, and Research monographs, and peer-reviewed papers in international journals) with a total citation more than 3600 and h-index 31 (Google Scholar Citation) and h-index = 23 (Scopus). He is the journal article reviewer of 35 international journals. He had served as editorial board member of books and international periodicals/journals. He is the life member of about 20 academic and professional societies. He has conducted and delivered training modules on diversified topics in more than 100 training programs at AIT and organized international conferences and workshops. He has completed 28 research and training projects sponsored by FAO, ILO, UNDP, UNEP, UNIFEM, UNESCAP, ASEAN and others. He is professionally active, associated with a number of organizations in India, and abroad. He also served as Academic Senate Chair and Faculty Representative, Founding Director of ASEAN Regional Center of Excellence on MDGs supported by UN at AIT. He is currently serving as the Governing Board Member of the Nabakrushna Choudhury Center of Development Studies, Bhubaneswar. He is a diversified academic professional and well known for his academic and seminal contributions.
