Short Bio: Asraful Alam is an Assistant Professor of Geography at Rampurhat College, affiliated to The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India. He has completed his Postgraduate degree from the Department of Geography at Visva-Bharati, one of India’s most revered universities. He furthered his expertise by obtaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Geoinformatics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, enhancing his proficiency in the field. Alam’s professional career began as a Guest Lecturer and Visiting Faculty at several institutions. These roles allowed him to gain valuable experience in teaching and curriculum development across various levels of higher education. Asraful Alam has demonstrated significant leadership and administrative acumen during his tenure at Rampurhat College, where he served twice as the Head of the Department of Geography. In addition to his departmental responsibilities, Alam has been an active Nodal Officer for several critical initiatives at the college since 2022, including the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) committee. Beyond his administrative duties, Alam has contributed to the broader academic community by serving as a subject expert, paper setter, and examiner for various universities, and as convener for undergraduate examinations.

Alam’s research interests are encompassing Environmental Geography, Hazard and Disaster Management, and the application of Remote Sensing and GIS in geographical studies. Alam’s notable research works includes the GIS-based data-driven bivariate statistical models for landslide susceptibility prediction in the Upper Tista Basin, India, published in “Heliyon“. Alam’s research extends to the study of river systems and their geomorphic processes. He has contributed to a chapter discussing the temporal variability of discharge and suspended sediment transport in the Subarnarekha River Basin, Eastern India, which was published by “Springer Nature Singapore“. In addition to his research on landslides, Alam has also co-authored a chapter on the application of RS-GIS-based Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) models for site suitability analysis in agricultural practices. This work, published in a book by “Springer Nature Switzerland“, emphasizes the role of geospatial technologies in optimizing agricultural land use.

Alam has also contributed to academic literature through his involvement in edited volumes and as a guest editor. He has co-edited a book titled “Recent Advancement in Geographical Studies: A Multidimensional Outlook, published by Rajesh Publications, and has served as a guest editor for a special issue of the Indian Journal of Spatial Science. Alam has been committed to continuous professional development, participating in numerous workshops, seminars, and training programs. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Alam has played a significant role in organizing academic events and contributing to the college community at Rampurhat College. Earlier, on December 6, 2017, Alam also served as the convener for a One Day State Level Seminar on “Applying Geomorphology to Environmental Management” at Rampurhat College. On September 23, 2021, Alam convened a One Day National Webinar titled “Current Trends in Geography and its Application“. He has served as the Organizing Secretary of an International Seminar on Recent Advancement in Geographical Studies: A Multidimensional Outlook held at Rampurhat College in September 2023, and He has also coordinated various workshops and special lectures and several important events at Rampurhat College, including special lecture on the “VUCA World and Resilience to Build Our Future” in December 2023, a workshop on “Structural Equation Modelling using AMOS” in May 2023, and an interactive session on career opportunities in February 2023. Alam has also delivered his talk on the “Evolution of Geographical Thinking in India: A Journey from Past to Present” at Kandra Radha Kanta Kundu Mahavidyalaya. Notably, he coordinated an “Add-on Course” on “Preparing Project / Dissertation Reports” in August-September 2024. Asraful Alam continues to make impactful contributions to the field of geography, with his latest work, co-edited a book titled “Recent Advancement in Geographical Research: Instances from India, accepted for publication by “Springer“.

His leadership in organizing these events demonstrates his commitment to enhancing the academic environment and providing students with opportunities to engage with current trends and methodologies in geography.
