Prof. Subir Sarkar : IAGR Conference 2024
Prof. Subir Sarkar is a retired Professor from the Department of Geography and Applied Geography at the University of North Bengal. He earned his Ph.D. in Geography and is a distinguished member of several learned societies, including the Geographical Society of India, the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists, and the Geological Society of India. Prof. Sarkar specializes in geomorphology, environmental studies, disaster management, and pedology. His research interests encompass geomorphology, environmental hazards, geo-informatics, hydrology, and watershed dynamics. Throughout his career, he has supervised 10 Ph.D. students and currently oversees six ongoing Ph.D. projects. His academic contributions include 36 journal publications, nine authored or edited books, and 30 book chapters. He has been recognized with memberships in prestigious committees such as the Expert Group on Spatial Data Technologies and the Steering Committee for the National Programme for Capacity Building for Earthquake Risk Management. Prof. Sarkar has also held several administrative roles, including Head of the Department of Geography and Applied Geography at North Bengal University and Convener of the North Bengal University Weather Service Station.
Prof. Sarkar has led and collaborated on numerous research projects, both nationally and internationally. His work includes studies on landslides, flood problems, and fluvial system evolution in the Darjeeling Himalaya, sponsored by esteemed organizations such as the Indian National Science Academy and the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has also contributed to several government-sponsored projects on flood management, erosion control, and resource mapping in North Bengal. As a visiting faculty member, Prof. Sarkar has taught at renowned institutions worldwide, including Montclair State University, USA, and the Leibnitz Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology, Germany. His extensive body of work and dedication to geographical research have significantly advanced the field, earning him recognition as a leading expert in his areas of specialization.
